Pre emergents

One important part to a successful growing season is a quality pre emergent barrier against weeds. As soil temperatures rise weeds in your lawn are trying to germinate. As the seed develops this pre emergent barrier will not allow roots to mature thus starving the plant of the nutrients it needs to break the surface of the soil. To be an effective pre emergent the product must be applied at least two weeks prior to germination. At Mathis Outdoors we are currently applying pre emergent from now until the end of spring.

Geting the most out of your summer watering

Fetalization and weed control are an important part of having a healthy green lawn this summer, but turf treatments are just a small part of a much bigger picture. Proper watering is the most important thing you can do for your lawn. Tropical grasses like bermuda, zoysia, and centipeed need
3-4 inches of rain a week to thrive any thing less and they are just surviving. Do not rely on Mother Nature to give you that mutch rain during the summer months. You will have to make up for the lack of rain with your irrigation system.

I am often asked “how long should I run my irrigation system for?” Every system is different so I can’t answer that question directly. What I can do is instruct you on how to calibrate your irrigation.
You will need two things and a few simple steps to be on your way to a beautiefull lawn this summer.

1) a stop watch (most stop watch apps are free)
2) a rain gauge (very inexpencive at your local hardware store)
Here are the steps
1) locate the spot in your lawn that dries out the fastest. Your lawn care specialist can help you find this area.
2) set up your rain gauge in this area
3) run your system in the zone where the rain gauge is
4) time how long it takes to fill the gauge too 1″
5) set your system to run each zone for that amount of time 3 to 4 times a week

Mowing also plays a part in a beautiefull healthy lawn. If you don’t have irrigation or can not water due to water restrictions their are some ways to help your lawn retain the moisture it gets. Mow your lawn at a higher setting (2.5 to 3 inches). This will shade the soil and help it keep its moisture. Do not cut off more than 1/3 of the grass blade in one mowing. What is that purple flowered weed in my yard?

Spring is a great time of year.  The birds are singing, the weather is warming, and the flowers are blooming.  Annual broad leaf weeds also start germinating in lawns in Coweta County and Fayette County Georgia this time of year.  One of the more common weeds that we see in the Newnan, Peachtree City, Senoia and Sharpsburg Georgia area is henbit .  It is an incredibly invasive weed that can grow to 12 inches tall.  It usually produces 2-4 stalks with a vibrant purple flower on the tips of the stalk.  No doubt this plant has a very beautiful bloom, but its place is not inside a well maintained lawn.  Our custom broad leaf weed treatment program helps to prevent this weed from germinating and eliminates it if it gets by a pre emergent treatment.  For more information on how we can provide you with the lawn you have always wanted, visit us at www.mathisoutdoors.com or call us at 770-301-5643henbitHenbit

February Lawn Tips by Mathis Outdoors – Reduce the amount of shade in your lawn

One way to improve the quality and density of your lawn is to provide optimal growing conditions for the type of turf you have.  One of the biggest problems we see as turf care specialists is a lack of sun light.  In Newnan, Sharpsburg, and Senoia 80% to 90% of the lawns we treat are warm season turfs (Bermuda, Zosia, and Centipede Lawns). In FayettevilleGa and Peachtree   CityGa 65% to 75% are warm season turfs. These turf types need a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight to exist in the landscape.  Eight to ten hours of direct sunlight is recommended.  Large deciduous trees such as oaks and maples create two issues.  One, they block sunlight with large and ever expanding canopies.  Two, their root systems create acidic conditions within the soil and compete with turfs for available moisture and nutrients.  If you see that you lawn is thinning in areas of heavy shade, take action this February.  Raise the canopy of the tree (cut the lower branches off) so that the turf can receive more morning and afternoon sun.  Also lime around the base of the tree (contact Mathis Outdoors for more information).  If the problem persists, consider removing the tree all together or extend your ground cover beds.

Over the years at Mathis Outdoors Inc. we have had the opportunity to deliver quality turf management to thousands of clients in CowetaCountyGa. and FayetteCountyGa. In that time we have learned that many do it yourself lawn enthusiast prefer that we do their chemical lawn applications. Why is this?

All of our clients have three things in common. First, they want a beautiful lawn. Second, they want dependable service from a trained professional. Third, they want to spend the least amount possible to get dependable results.

If you were to go to Home Depot or Lowes today and pick up a bag of “Name Brand Fertilizer” you will pay up to $56.00 for 12000 square feet (an average lawn size). Mathis Outdoors Inc. can treat your lawn with high quality products that “Brand Name Fertilizers” cannot compete with. In addition, the price is approximately the same. Other variables factor into the quality of your results such as timing of the application and making sure the calibration of your application is correct. The bottom line is this: If you have never tried professional lawn treatments, you should. Your results will improve while you save money.
